Spring Cleaning Tips

EXTERIOR

  • Driveways: patch cracks/fill holes/seal
  • Walks: check levelness/cracking
  • Window Wells: clean out
  • Dry Wells/Storm Drains: check for flow clogs
  • Trees/Shrubs: prune/trim away from roof area and siding
  • Grass: sod/seed bare spots
  • Wood fence/retaining walls: check for decay/supports/leaning/cracks
  • Adjacent Soil: grade to direct rainwater away from house/fill-in low spots and add top soil
  • Insect Infestation: look for insect activity
  • Settling and Cracks: seal to keep water/insects out
  • Wood: check for deterioration/discoloring
  • Metal and Vinyl: power clean to avoid cracking
  • Joints: recaulk all loose/missing joints
  • Soil Contact: keep 6" minimum clearance
  • Brick/Stone/Stucco: check for deterioration/cracks/missing mortar
  • Glass: replace broken panes/check putty
  • Screens: clean and install. Remove/store storm windows/door inserts
  • Weather Stripping: refit/replace if needed
  • Chimney Exterior: replace loose mortar/check chimney cap
  • Shingles: reposition/replace damaged/missing/loose elements. Treat wood roofs and siding with a perservative if needed. Remove any branches/leaves. Trim back trees adjacent to roof.
  • Gutters and Downspouts: clean and seal seams/check for sags or missing supports. And splashblocks or pipe water away at downspout discharge
  • Exterior Taps: close and charge wate lines, check for leaks when water is turned on
  • Sprinklers: clear heads/check operation

INTERIOR

  • Walls and Ceilings: trace leaks/repair/refinish
  • Floors: repair, refinish warping/settling damage
  • Stairs: check for loose/missing hand rails
  • Windows: repair defective mechanisms/replace broken panes
  • Attic Ventilation: be certain proper air flow is maintained during summer months. Check ventilation openings for nests/blockage. Screen all possible entry points.
  • Attic Insulation: bring up to recommended levels (R-30) keep off ventilation areas
  • Sump Pump: test, clean pit as necessary
  • Heating and Cooling Systems: have serviced and replace air filters monthly
  • Water Heater: drain water and sediment off monthly
  • Humidifier: turn off and clean
  • Room Air Conditioner: install and inspect window units
  • Attic fan: check and lubricate where necessary
  • Faucets, Drains, Traps, Piping: check for leaks
  • Washing Machine Drain: install lint trap
  • Kitchen/Bathroom Vent Fans: change filter and clean
  • Smoke Alarms: install one on each level of home and test
  • Carbon Monoxide Detector: install in each bedroom and test
  • Fire Extinguishers: install at kitchen/workshop area
  • Door Locks: check/install patio door locks
  • Exterior Lighting: check and clean
