In 1834 the town of Coffee Creek took its name from a local creek running through what was at the time downtown.  Although Chesterton finally adopted its current name in 1870, the region and the Indiana Dunes have always been synonymous.  Today there’s more to Chesterton than just its 15 miles of breathtaking, sandy, Lake Michigan beaches.  Locals enjoy great restaurants, golf, wonderful city and state parks, and as always, take great pride in their town’s role as the gateway to the great Indiana Dunes.

One of our favorite restaurants in Chesterton is Lucrezia, serving tasty Northern Italian cuisine.  Another local favorite is Wagner's, voted “Best Ribs in the Region” for nearly 20 years in an row!

The Wizard of Oz Festival is a nationally recognized three day festival every year in Chesterton featuring a parade, look-alike contest, auction and more.  The festival is an opportunity to celebrate both the magical novel by L. Frank Baum, and its famous film adaptations.

Parks and Recreation

You can’t visit Chesterton without stopping by the Indiana Dunes State Park for the beautiful dunes and beaches of Lake Michigan.  Hikers will enjoy a mix of over 45 miles of wetland, river, prairie, forest, and rugged dune trails.

The Brassie Golf Club is considered one of the best golfing values in Northwest Indiana.  It is a semi-private, 18-hole championship golf course featuring rolling terrain, strategic bunkering, for a memorable golf experience.

The Sand Creek Country Club offers resort style service and facilities with its private Marsh, Creek, and Lake golf courses.  Facilities include a fitness and health club, tennis, swimming pool, fine dining, and of course, world class golf.

According to City-Data.com the median household income for Chesterton homes from a 2009 study shows an income of $54,105 compared to $45,424 for all of Indiana.

Median home values for Chesterton in the same time frame were $174,594 compared to $123,100 for the rest of the state.

Schools, Health, Transportation

Hospital and healthcare facilities near Chesterton include the Porter, Valparaiso Hospital in Valparaiso, The St. Mary Medical Center Inc. located in Hobart, and the Franciscan St. Anthony Health Center in Michigan City.

Amtrak has a station 12 miles away in Michigan City at 100 Washington St.

There are several colleges and universities close to Chesterton.  Purdue University-North Central Campus is in Westville.  As well there is Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Ivy Tech Community College-Northwest in Gary, Indiana University-Northwest also in Gary, Purdue University-Calumet Campus in Hammond, City Colleges of Chicago-Olive-Harvey College in Chicago, and South Suburban College in South Holland, Illinois.
