Shopping and Dining

Most of the shopping options in St. John are located along Wicker Avenue and are only a short drive from most homes. The St. John’s Mall offers local antique and collectible stores along with flower shops and clothing stores. Larger well-known clothing and retail outlets serve the area, and shopping centers in the surrounding cities of Schererville, Highland and Hobart are just a short distance away. Hop aboard the South Shore Train and take a 45-minute ride to Chicago for big city shopping. The Lighthouse Outlet Mall in Michigan City carries many designer brands and makes for a nice day trip.

A variety of dining options await the casual or fine diner in St. John and the surrounding area: from burgers to barbecue to fine dining, there’s not a shortage of options here. Breakfast is served at Avgo and a variety of locally owned pizza shops and burger joints await the hungry visitor. Take a short drive to Teibel’s Family Restaurant in nearby Schererville for a fine seafood meal.

Families on the go enjoy a variety of nationally known chain restaurants and sandwich shops which round out the eating and dining experience in St. John.

Parks and Recreation

The city of St. John prides itself on maintaining over 22 parks which host a variety of seasonal activities. Bike and walking trails wind through the town and many residents take advantage of the nature trails and sports complexes.  The Prairie West Park sits on 2.5 acres and has Movie in the Park Night during the summer and a heated pavilion for colder events. The Parks and Recreation Department prints a seasonal guide to local classes and adventures and also pairs with the surrounding communities to promote day trips and nature walks.

One of the biggest draws to the area is the Shrine of Christ’s Passion. This half-mile interactive trail offers a peaceful environment for prayer and reflection while learning about The Passion of Christ.

Living

According to City-Data.com the median household income for St. John homes from a 2021 study shows an income of $363,250 compared to $182,400 for all of Indiana.

Median home values for Dyer in the same time frame were $316,599 compared to $156,000 for the rest of the state.

The city of St. John has seen much growth the past few years as more people move from Chicago to quieter surrounding communities. St. John prides itself on maintaining growth and keeping its peaceful, small town feel. Farmer’s markets in the summer and breakfast with Santa are just some of the seasonal offerings in St. John. Many consider St. John a positive place to raise a family.

Schools, Health, Transportation

St. John is served by two area school districts. Lake Central School Corporation serves students living north of 101^st Avenue while the Hanover Community School Corporation Hanover Community School Corporation serves students living south of 101^st Avenue. Eight elementary schools serve the area along with four middle schools and two high schools. Parents looking for private education options for their pre-K to 8^th grade students have the choice of St. John Evangelist Elementary School or Crown Point Christian School (located in St. John).

Schools in Northwestern Indiana typically rate higher in the percentage of high school graduates than the rest of the state and St. John prides itself on offering students strong college prep curriculum.

There are no local colleges reside in St. John, however many top institutions including Purdue University Northwest and Indiana University Northwest are just a short 15 to 20 minute drive away.

Residents in the area have access to a variety of quality medical facilities including Franciscan Physician Network Family Care Center for urgent care services and a variety of rehab clinics. The Community Hospital Outpatient Centre also calls St. John home.

Investing in St. John real estate means great access to transportation options. St John is connected by a variety major interstates and highways. Amtrak provides service to Chicago and other national locations. The South Shore Commuter train connects residents in the Northwest Indiana from South Bend to Chicago. O’Hare International Airport and Midway Airport in Chicago are just an hour’s drive away and a variety of smaller private and municipal airports serve the area.
