Years past, in a region where Indian trails intersected and eventually became wagon trails for settlers traveling west, Nicholas Scherer of Germany settled into the region in 1866 near the southern tip of Lake Michigan. Today the trails are made of concrete and asphalt with names like US Highways 41 and 30, and Interstates 80 and 94. Yet the characteristics that made Schererville of the 19th century a success continue to fuel today’s achievements: reasonable housing costs and a high level of town services. Appropriately, Schererville was named one of the “100 Best Places to Live in the U.S.” by Money Magazine in 2007.
